I’m a 52 year old woman, and I’ve finally found a way to feel the way I want to feel

It’s all my 21-year-old daughters’ fault. She was looking for a personal trainer. She found one.

And the bonus was I found one too: Bonnie at Fabulous Physical Fun at Ferny Grove.

It’s called a fitness studio, but it’s more than that.

Yes, there are all the classes thoughtfully tailored for the over 40’s, 50’s and beyond. (Or people who are just a bit stiff or have hit the realisation: I really need to start some sort of exercise...)

But there’s also the laughter, the group support and motivation to keep going, and a coffee together as well.

I’m a hairdresser, on my feet all day. And talking all day. (I do love the talking bit.) I love to ride my horse. But to keep up my strength and balance, I have to do more. I’ve tried the DIY fitness at home, but it just doesn’t work for me.

I get something extra from a group class. Music to make the experience fun, then there’s being able to watch and follow the trainer to get the technique right. It feels so good when you get the technique right!

I like the variety of different classes and different trainers. I’ve tried the boxing - love that; Zumba - my favourite; then there’s strength training – I’d never done that before - was a bit sceptical and nervous about weights and cardio, but gently does it and I’m fine; and all the stretchiness that is pilates.

And then there are the women in the class who are older than me and doing the moves so easily, with such grace.

It’s not designed to be competitive, so let’s call it inspiring.

My daughter pushed me through the front door. But now I go because I’ve noticed everything is just easier - all the things I have to do each day. And then I’m not so tired at the end of the day. And sleep…

After 3 years, I’m now in a routine where I go to my training sessions all year round. Summer’s coming – bring out the shorts – I’m ready!

Just by walking in the door of the studio I discovered getting started into a mid-life fitness routine was easier than I ever imagined.

I’ve finally found a way to feel the way I want to feel. Stronger. More balanced. More energy. Mentally and physically more alert.  It took time, and a gentle, consistent effort. And on a cold morning when I don’t want to get out of bed, I remind myself of that.

If I want to keep feeling this good, just keep doing what I’m doing.
